Westhampton
Tom knew going home again would be tough, but he didn’t expect this…
Haunted by an accident he caused in high school, a damaged filmmaker is forced to go back to the scene of the tragedy and face the friends whose lives he ruined and a town that disdains him. Jumping between the present and an indie film he made about the accident reveals how the true events played out far differently than depicted in his movie.
Summary
Westhampton follows a troubled filmmaker who returns to the town where, during high school, he caused an accident that permanently altered the lives of everyone involved. Years later, he is still haunted by what happened, while the people he left behind have not forgotten it. His homecoming forces him to confront former friends who see him as responsible for their suffering, as well as a community that regards him with suspicion and resentment. The filmmaker’s return is complicated by an indie movie he made about the accident. As the story moves between the present-day fallout and scenes from that earlier film, the gap between his artistic version of events and the reality experienced by those around him gradually comes into focus. The movie within the movie becomes both a confession and a defense, revealing how memory, guilt, and self-preservation can reshape the past. At its center, Westhampton is a character-driven drama about accountability and the difficulty of seeking forgiveness when the damage cannot simply be undone. It explores the ways people create narratives to live with trauma, the ethical limits of turning personal tragedy into art, and the tension between public perception and private truth. The filmmaker’s strained relationships with his former friends provide the emotional core, while the town itself functions as a constant reminder of the life he left behind. Rather than treating the accident as a single defining moment, the film examines its long afterlife—and the painful process of deciding whether facing the truth can offer any path forward.
