Watcher

Summary

In Watcher, Julia, a young American actress, moves to Bucharest with her husband, Francis, after he accepts a new job there. Unable to speak the language and struggling to find her footing in an unfamiliar city, Julia spends much of her time alone in their new apartment. Her isolation deepens when she notices a man in the building across the street who appears to be watching her through his window. At first, Julia tries to convince herself that the stranger’s attention is harmless, but his presence becomes increasingly unsettling as news spreads about a serial killer targeting women in the city. Her concerns are met with varying degrees of skepticism. Francis, absorbed in his work and more comfortable in their new surroundings, is reluctant to see the situation as dangerous, while the police appear dismissive of Julia’s fears. A potential friendship with Irina, a woman living nearby, offers Julia some companionship, but it does little to ease the sense that she is being observed. The film centers on Julia’s growing anxiety as she attempts to distinguish between intuition and paranoia. Maika Monroe gives the character a restrained, vulnerable performance, portraying a woman whose lack of language, local knowledge, and social support leaves her especially exposed. The watcher across the street, played by Burn Gorman, remains an unnerving and ambiguous presence, while Karl Glusman’s performance as Francis underscores the emotional distance that develops within Julia’s marriage. More than a conventional thriller, Watcher explores the fear of being unseen when one’s warnings are ignored—and the fear of being seen when someone’s attention feels threatening. Its deliberately controlled pacing, stark compositions, and claustrophobic urban setting create a mood of mounting dread. The film also examines gendered vulnerability, displacement, marital alienation, and the ways institutions and loved ones can undermine a person’s sense of reality. Without relying on constant shocks, it builds tension through Julia’s isolation and the unsettling possibility that her suspicions may be justified.
