Summary
Vanvaas is a Hindi-language family drama about abandonment, memory, and the fragile bonds between parents and children. Nana Patekar plays Deepak Tyagi, an elderly man whose declining mental health and dependence on others make him increasingly vulnerable. After his family’s priorities shift and old resentments surface, Deepak finds himself pushed to the margins of the household and ultimately separated from the people he once believed would always stand by him. His path crosses with Veer, a young man played by Utkarsh Sharma, whose own difficult circumstances and streetwise outlook initially place him at odds with Deepak’s needs. Their unexpected relationship gradually becomes the emotional center of the film, as both men confront loneliness, mistrust, and the need for human connection. Simrat Kaur is also part of the younger ensemble, representing the changing perspectives and relationships that surround them. Set against the cultural and spiritual backdrop of Varanasi, Vanvaas explores what happens when family unity is tested by financial pressures, personal ambition, generational conflict, and the demands of modern life. The title evokes the idea of being sent into exile—not only from one’s home, but from the emotional security of one’s own family. The film contrasts biological ties with the compassion that can grow between strangers, while asking whether love, responsibility, and forgiveness can survive when relatives stop treating one another as a shared responsibility. With Nana Patekar bringing gravity and vulnerability to the central role, Vanvaas aims for an emotionally direct portrait of an older man searching for dignity and belonging. Its focus is less on spectacle than on the painful choices families make, the sacrifices they expect from one another, and the possibility of rediscovering empathy before those bonds are lost.
