Ulya
A giant girl lives in a wild rural environment. When the modern world enters this isolated Russian Old Believer milieu, the girl is taken away and dragged into the world of professional sports. The aim does not differ much from that of a circus in the Middle Ages – to entertain audiences and exploit the limits of people’s mental and physical abilities. But the girl proves to have unbelievable willpower and athletic talent. She is able to adapt and triumph in this new world. This is the story of the famous basketball player Ulyana Semyonova.
Summary
“Ulya” follows Ulyana Semyonova, a remarkably tall and physically gifted girl growing up in an isolated rural community shaped by the traditions of Russian Old Believers. Far from the modern world, she is accustomed to a life governed by nature, faith, and family custom. Her extraordinary stature makes her an object of fascination when outsiders arrive, and she is eventually taken from her home and introduced to the highly competitive world of professional sport. In the city, Ulyana is pushed toward basketball, where her height and natural ability make her valuable to coaches, organizers, and spectators. The film contrasts the quiet, self-contained world she leaves behind with a sports industry that can treat exceptional bodies as commodities—displaying them, training them, and testing their limits for public entertainment. Around Ulyana are the people who seek to shape her career, from demanding sports professionals to those who view her less as a person than as a rare physical phenomenon. Her own growing sense of identity and agency becomes increasingly important as she learns to navigate unfamiliar rules, expectations, and attention. At its heart, “Ulya” is a coming-of-age story about adaptation, exploitation, and self-determination. It considers the uneasy relationship between individual talent and the institutions that claim to develop it, while also examining the spectacle of elite sport and the pressures placed on athletes whose bodies set them apart. Ulyana’s journey from an isolated community to the international arena is presented not simply as a rise to fame, but as a struggle to preserve her will and humanity within a world eager to define her by her size and athletic potential.
