Summary

Set in 1990s Bangladesh, Toofan follows Galib, a young man born into tragedy and marked as an outsider by the village around him. With few opportunities and even fewer people willing to stand beside him, Galib turns to crime, gradually building a reputation for ruthlessness and adopting the feared name “Toofan.” What begins as a struggle for survival develops into an ambitious bid for control, as he rises through the underworld and constructs a criminal empire. Shakib Khan anchors the film as Galib/Toofan, portraying both the vulnerability of a man shaped by deprivation and the commanding presence of the gangster he becomes. Around him are figures drawn into his orbit through loyalty, fear, love, and self-interest, including powerful associates and adversaries whose competing agendas keep his position unstable. The story also brings in authorities determined to stop Toofan’s expansion, creating a tense contest between an increasingly influential criminal force and a system that is struggling to contain him. Directed by Raihan Rafi, the film blends gangster drama, action spectacle, and a larger-than-life rise-and-fall narrative. Its period setting gives the story a gritty social backdrop, while Toofan’s transformation reflects how poverty, exclusion, and institutional corruption can help create the very threats that society later condemns. The movie is also interested in the making of a public legend: how fear can become power, how a name can eclipse the person behind it, and how maintaining an empire may demand sacrifices that are difficult to reverse. Rather than presenting its central gangster as a simple hero or villain, Toofan explores the uneasy relationship between victimhood and ambition. Its violence and heightened style are paired with questions about identity, loyalty, authority, and the price of reinventing oneself. As law enforcement closes in and rival forces challenge his dominance, Toofan becomes a tense portrait of a man trying to control both his criminal empire and the story others tell about him.
