Although Sun Wukong was blocked by Ru Lai's mana, the Bull-Demon King still failed to assassinate him. But he brought Ah Yi back, and in order to save Ah Yi, Sun Wukong hit the Dragon Palace. Sun Wukong and the Dragon Prince fight from the sea to Nantianmen. Sun Wukong was finally coerced by Ah Yi and returned to Wuzhi Mountain to continue his practice, waiting for someone with a predestined relationship.

Summary

“The Monkey King” (2022) offers a fresh animated take on the legendary Chinese hero Sun Wukong, blending mythological spectacle with a more intimate story about guilt, loyalty, and the possibility of redemption. After being imprisoned beneath Wuzhi Mountain for 400 years, the rebellious Monkey King is unexpectedly freed by Ah Yi, a determined young girl whose parents were killed by the Dragon Prince. She hopes Sun Wukong can escort her to the Heavenly Palace, where she intends to demand justice. Their journey quickly draws the attention of the Dragon Prince, who has his own reasons for pursuing Sun Wukong. The Monkey King once caused the destruction of the Dragon Palace in the East China Sea, and the prince is determined to make him pay. He enlists Sun Wukong’s former ally, the formidable Demon King—also known as the Bull-Demon King—to carry out an attack. Although Sun Wukong’s powers remain restricted by the spiritual authority of Ru Lai, he is still a dangerous and unpredictable force, and the failed assassination attempt sets off a broader conflict involving the Dragon Palace, the sea, and the gates of Heaven. At the center of the film is the unlikely bond between Sun Wukong and Ah Yi. He is an impulsive, battle-hardened trickster struggling with the consequences of his past, while she is grieving, courageous, and unwilling to accept the injustice inflicted on her family. Their relationship gives the familiar myth a human dimension, gradually turning a mission for revenge into a test of trust and responsibility. The Dragon Prince serves as both a personal antagonist and a symbol of old grievances that refuse to disappear, while the Demon King embodies the complicated loyalties and rivalries of Sun Wukong’s past. The film’s major themes include the cost of rebellion, the difference between revenge and justice, and the idea that true strength requires self-control rather than simply overwhelming power. Its battles—from underwater clashes to confrontations near the Heavenly Palace—provide the expected fantasy spectacle, but the emotional focus remains on whether Sun Wukong can move beyond his reputation as a destructive force. With its colorful mythology, fast-moving action, and emphasis on friendship and moral growth, “The Monkey King” presents a spirited, accessible version of one of China’s most enduring legends without losing sight of the character’s more vulnerable side.
