Summary

Streams (2023) follows Amel, a Tunisian woman returning to a society that has already judged her. Released from prison after an adulterous affair, she discovers that her son, Moumen, has disappeared. Once a promising young football player, Moumen has been devastated by the public scandal surrounding his mother, and Amel sets out through the violent, unsettled streets of Tunis to find him. Her search takes her through a city marked by poverty, anger, corruption, and social decay, bringing her into contact with people and institutions that reflect the pressures she has been trying to escape. Amel is both fiercely determined and deeply vulnerable, while Moumen remains an elusive but powerful presence at the center of her journey: a young man whose dreams and identity have been damaged by shame and rejection. Directed with a raw, often dreamlike intensity, Streams is less a conventional missing-person drama than an emotionally charged portrait of a mother and son trapped by a merciless social environment. The film explores motherhood, guilt, sexual repression, public humiliation, and the ways patriarchal communities punish women while leaving young people to bear the consequences. Its harsh urban atmosphere and fractured storytelling convey a country struggling with its own wounds, while Amel’s pursuit of Moumen gives the film its emotional core: a desperate attempt to recover love and dignity in a world that seems determined to deny both.
