Summary

Fear (2025) is a tense Polish drama set in Podlasie, a region of forests and rural roads near the Belarusian border. Jola, a local taxi driver, has built a practical life around keeping her distance from controversy. Her son, Marek, works for the Border Guard, searching the woods for people who have crossed the border illegally. Their opposing positions reflect a deep divide within the community: for Marek, border security is a duty; for Jola, the crisis is something she would rather not confront directly. That detachment becomes impossible when Jola’s car breaks down, drawing her into circumstances she cannot simply drive away from. The encounter forces her to reconsider the assumptions that have shaped her view of migrants, the border, and her son’s work. As the pressure around her increases, the film focuses less on political slogans than on the intimate consequences of a humanitarian crisis—particularly the strain placed on family, conscience, and everyday life. Jola is the story’s emotional center: independent, observant, and initially determined to remain uninvolved. Marek represents a more institutional understanding of responsibility, though his role is complicated by his relationship with his mother and by the human realities he encounters in the forest.
