When his girlfriend leaves for New York City on a 3-month-long internship, a strongly opinionated Berkeley arthouse movie theater manager begins exploring life as a bachelor.

Summary

“Shortcomings” follows Ben Tanaka, a sharp-tongued, self-styled cinephile who manages an arthouse movie theater in Berkeley, California. Opinionated and skeptical about both mainstream entertainment and the people around him, Ben is in a long-term relationship with Miko, a Japanese American woman working in the Bay Area. Their relationship is strained by mismatched expectations, unresolved insecurities, and Ben’s tendency to judge others while avoiding an honest examination of himself. When Miko leaves for New York City for a three-month internship, Ben suddenly has the freedom to live as a bachelor. Instead of finding clarity, however, he becomes increasingly preoccupied with dating and with his own ideas about attraction, race, and what makes someone desirable. His romantic encounters expose the gap between the progressive, culturally sophisticated identity he likes to project and the selfishness and bias that shape his choices. Ben’s closest confidante is Alice, his lesbian best friend, whose directness and loyalty make her one of the few people willing to challenge him. As Ben navigates new relationships and attempts to define what he wants, Alice’s perspective offers an important counterweight to his self-absorption. Miko, though physically absent for much of the story, remains central to the emotional conflict as Ben confronts the consequences of their complicated bond. Adapted from Adrian Tomine’s graphic novel and directed by Randall Park, “Shortcomings” is an understated romantic comedy-drama about flawed people struggling to become more self-aware. Its title points not only to the limitations of Ben’s relationships but also to the personal blind spots that keep him from connecting with others. The film explores Asian American identity, interracial desire, loneliness, friendship, and the discomfort of recognizing one’s own hypocrisy, balancing dry humor with an unsparing look at emotional immaturity.
