Summary
Set in 2007 on the outskirts of Bengaluru, Romancham follows a lively group of seven unmarried friends sharing a cramped house and navigating the aimless, chaotic rhythms of bachelor life. Their days are filled with petty arguments, practical jokes, financial worries, romantic frustrations, and the kind of intense camaraderie that develops among people who have little privacy but plenty of time together. At the center of the group is Jaison, whose restless curiosity helps set the story’s supernatural events in motion, alongside friends such as Aju, Jibi, Kuttappi, and Bibi, each bringing a distinct personality to the crowded household. Looking for excitement—and perhaps answers to some of their ordinary problems—the friends experiment with a Ouija board. What begins as a lark soon turns into an unexpectedly genuine encounter with a spirit. Rather than simply running away, the group tries to understand and make use of the situation, treating the supernatural presence with a mixture of fear, opportunism, skepticism, and comic enthusiasm. Their attempts to communicate with it gradually disrupt the fragile routines of the house, creating a string of absurd situations as the friends struggle to decide whether they are dealing with a miracle, a threat, or merely another source of entertainment. Romancham works as both a horror comedy and an affectionate portrait of male friendship. Its humor comes from the contrast between the grand mystery of the spirit world and the small, often ridiculous concerns of the roommates. The film also explores loneliness, superstition, youthful recklessness, and the desire to find control in lives that feel stalled or uncertain. Beneath its energetic scares and broad comedy is a warm depiction of a makeshift family: a group of flawed young men whose loyalty to one another is as powerful—and as unpredictable—as the supernatural force they invite into their home.
