Ciociaria, early ‘50s. A young farmhand is recruited to participate in Miss Italia selections, but her body measurements are not quite right for the contest. To undergo a terrible process of physical transformation seems to be the only way to be elected Reginetta.

Summary

Set in Ciociaria in the early 1950s, Reginetta follows a young farmhand whose life is rooted in hard work, rural poverty, and the expectations of her community. When she is recruited to take part in the selections for Miss Italia, the invitation appears to offer an extraordinary chance to leave the fields behind and enter a more glamorous, modern world. Yet the contest’s ideal of femininity is rigid: although she has the beauty and charisma to attract attention, her body does not conform to the required measurements. Encouraged—and pressured—by the people around her, the young woman is led toward a painful and deeply unsettling process intended to reshape her physically. The pageant organizers and intermediaries present this transformation as the price of success, while her family and community reflect the conflicting hopes and fears that accompany her possible escape from rural life. At the center of the film is the protagonist’s struggle to determine whether the opportunity is truly hers or simply another system demanding obedience. Rather than treating the beauty contest as a lighthearted fairy tale, Reginetta uses it to examine postwar Italy’s changing social landscape. The film contrasts traditional agricultural life with the emerging allure of celebrity, consumer culture, and national recognition, while questioning who gets to define beauty and how much women are expected to sacrifice to meet that definition. Its restrained period setting and physical emphasis give the story an unsettling intimacy, turning a seemingly glamorous competition into a portrait of class pressure, bodily control, and the complicated desire for a different future.
