Summary
Ravage (2023) is a bleak post-apocalyptic survival drama set in a world devastated by a mutated strain of COVID-19. The disease has swept across the globe, while the collapse of civilization and the outbreak of World War III have pushed humanity toward extinction. With society gone and wildlife seemingly wiped out, the film follows an unnamed man who may be the last human being alive. Living amid the ruins of the world he once knew, the survivor must contend with scarcity, isolation, and the psychological burden of absolute solitude. His struggle is not limited to finding food, shelter, and safety; he must also preserve his sense of identity and purpose when there is no community left to return to and no clear future ahead. The surrounding devastation becomes both a physical obstacle and a reflection of his increasingly fragile state of mind. The protagonist is the film’s central and virtually defining character, with the empty landscape serving as an important presence in its own right. Rather than relying on a large ensemble, Ravage focuses on the experience of one person confronting the consequences of humanity’s failures. Its central themes include survival, loneliness, the destructive potential of war and disease, and the question of what it means to remain human after civilization has disappeared. The film’s stark premise and desolate atmosphere offer a somber meditation on isolation and the value of human connection without revealing how the survivor’s ordeal ultimately unfolds.
