Summary

Rasuk (2022) is an Indonesian supernatural horror film about a teacher struggling to resume her duties after a devastating tragedy. Still haunted by what happened, she returns to a school where the students and staff expect her to carry on as normal, even as her unresolved trauma makes the ordinary routines of teaching increasingly difficult. At the same time, five students set out on an excursion near a river. Their outing takes a sinister turn when one of them discovers a mysterious bottle and opens it, releasing a malevolent presence. The danger soon reaches the students who remain at the dormitory, where one young person after another begins to fall under the entity’s influence. As fear spreads through the school, the teacher and the students must confront an enemy they barely understand while trying to protect one another and find a way to survive. The film centers on the traumatized teacher, whose personal grief gives the supernatural crisis an emotional dimension, and on the students forced to grow up quickly in the face of escalating danger. Their shifting relationships, divided loyalties, and attempts to care for one another form the human core of the story. Alongside its possession-driven scares, Rasuk explores the lasting effects of trauma, the vulnerability of young people in isolated environments, and the difficult sacrifices demanded by friendship and responsibility. Its riverside setting, dormitory corridors, and enclosed school grounds create an atmosphere of mounting dread, while the mysterious bottle serves as a tangible link between everyday curiosity and forces beyond human control.
