Summary

“Raps” (2023) follows Daniel, a troubled teenager sent to a CEDU school in late-1990s America, where the promise of rehabilitation masks a deeply coercive environment. There, students are subjected to “Raps,” intense group therapy sessions designed to force confessions, expose vulnerabilities, and break down their sense of self. What begins as an imposed treatment program gradually becomes a battle over Daniel’s identity, trust, and ability to resist the authority of the adults controlling his life. Daniel is the film’s emotional center: frightened, defensive, and increasingly aware that the school’s methods are less about healing than obedience. Around him are fellow students, each carrying different forms of pain and adaptation, as well as counselors and administrators who present psychological pressure as necessary discipline.
