Summary

Rainbow is a vibrant, contemporary reimagining of The Wizard of Oz set in Spain. Dora, a headstrong teenage girl with a powerful singing voice, has grown up feeling the absence of her mother, who disappeared when she was very young. After a painful upheaval in her family life, Dora leaves home with her loyal dog, Toto, determined to find the woman she has spent years wondering about. Her search takes her into an unpredictable world where she encounters a group of colorful outsiders, including the guarded young man Pato, the flamboyant Muñeca, and the mysterious Coco. Though their personalities and backgrounds could hardly be more different, the travelers form an uneasy alliance as they move through a surreal, music-filled landscape. Pursuing them is Maribel, a wealthy and formidable woman whose influence and apparent interest in Dora give the journey a mounting sense of danger. Rather than simply reproducing the familiar Oz story, Rainbow uses its fantasy framework to explore adolescence, identity, family secrets, and the need to define oneself beyond other people’s expectations. Dora’s companions represent different forms of marginalization and self-invention, while their developing friendship becomes as important as Dora’s search for her mother. Filled with pop performances, vivid imagery, and a deliberately eccentric tone, the film blends road movie, coming-of-age drama, and fairy tale into a story about finding belonging while learning to trust one’s own voice.
