Summary
“Iru” (2023) is a romantic drama about Rishi and Priya, classmates whose friendship gradually develops into love during their college years. Their relationship is sincere and emotionally grounded, but it soon encounters resistance from Priya’s father, who objects to the match because of their different caste backgrounds. What begins as a personal romance therefore becomes a conflict between youthful independence and the rigid social expectations upheld by family and community. Priya is caught between her feelings for Rishi and the authority of a protective but deeply prejudiced parent, while Rishi must confront the limits imposed on their relationship by circumstances beyond their control. Priya’s father’s friend Ravindran becomes a key figure in the conflict, devising a plan intended to separate the couple. His involvement shifts the story from a straightforward love story into a more tense drama about manipulation, loyalty, and the lengths people will go to preserve established social boundaries. The film explores caste discrimination, parental control, class and social pressure, and the difficult choices faced by young people seeking to determine their own futures. At its center is the question of whether love can survive when family honor and inherited prejudice are treated as more important than individual happiness. “Iru” combines the emotional appeal of a campus romance with a critique of the social structures that attempt to define whom people may love.
