Summary

Set in the year 2200, Previously Saved Version follows Naoki and Mayumi, a married couple living in extraordinary luxury aboard a floating residence in space. From the outside, their life appears flawless: they enjoy wealth, privacy, and an existence seemingly freed from the troubles of the old world. Beneath that polished surface, however, their relationship is marked by resentment and concealed motives, particularly on Naoki’s part. Naoki secretly pursues revenge against Mayumi and uses advanced technology to remake her as an android. Rather than accepting his wife as an independent, imperfect person, he attempts to reproduce and reshape her according to his own ideal, creating a version he can control and preserve. The android Mayumi becomes central to an increasingly unsettling domestic drama as the boundaries between the original person, the artificial copy, and Naoki’s memories of their relationship begin to blur. Blending intimate marital conflict with futuristic science fiction, the film explores obsession, possession, and the dangerous desire to perfect the people we love. Its spacebound setting reinforces the couple’s isolation, while its focus on artificial life raises questions about identity, memory, consent, and whether a convincing reproduction can ever replace an individual. Previously Saved Version is less a conventional adventure than a tense, psychologically charged meditation on technology’s ability to preserve appearances while exposing the emotional damage underneath.
