Summary

Paranoia (2021) follows Dina, a woman trying to protect herself and her teenage daughter, Laura, after years of living under the shadow of her abusive husband, Gion. With Gion in prison, Dina seizes the opportunity to flee with Laura, hoping to build a safer life far from his control. Their escape, however, is complicated by another secret: Dina has taken a valuable antique statue connected to Gion, giving him an additional reason to pursue them. The mother and daughter settle temporarily in an isolated house, but their fragile sense of security begins to unravel when the COVID-19 pandemic leads to Gion’s early release. Fearful that he will find them, Dina becomes increasingly vigilant, while Laura struggles with the confusion and emotional strain of being uprooted. Their isolation grows even more uneasy when they encounter Raka, a mysterious man whose presence offers both possible assistance and new reasons for suspicion. Rather than relying solely on conventional thriller mechanics, Paranoia builds tension through uncertainty and fractured trust. Dina’s trauma affects how she interprets every threat, while Laura’s growing independence creates another source of conflict between them. Gion represents the enduring reach of domestic abuse, even when he is physically absent, and Raka’s ambiguous role keeps the characters—and the audience—questioning who can be believed. Set against the atmosphere of pandemic-era anxiety, the film explores fear, manipulation, survival, and the psychological consequences of abuse. Its confined locations and shifting relationships create a claustrophobic mood, making paranoia less a single character trait than a condition that infects everyone. The result is a tense, character-driven mystery about a mother and daughter attempting to escape the past while discovering that safety is difficult to distinguish from suspicion.
