Olivia
Springe, a bourgeois little town in Lower Saxony in the 1970s and 80s. Evelin is caught between shame, worry, and social pressure due to the otherness of her son Oliver, who ultimately escapes to the Kiez quarter of Hamburg. Thanks to a big heart, an irrepressible sense of humour, and the ability to get up every time he’s down, Oliver manages the transformation to Olivia Jones, drag icon, entertainer, and Kiez restaurateur.
Summary
Set in the small Lower Saxony town of Springe during the 1970s and ’80s, Olivia follows Oliver, a sensitive and spirited boy whose difference becomes impossible to ignore in a community shaped by convention and social judgment. At home, his mother, Evelin, struggles with a mix of love, fear, embarrassment, and concern over the pressures her son faces. Her uncertainty reflects not a lack of affection, but the difficulty of supporting a child whose identity and ambitions challenge the expectations of family and society. As Oliver grows older, he finds it increasingly hard to imagine a future in Springe and eventually makes his way to Hamburg’s Kiez, a livelier and more accepting world of nightlife, performance, and self-invention. There, his warmth, quick humor, and determination help him build a new life and develop the larger-than-life persona of Olivia Jones. The film traces this transformation from an outsider in a provincial town to a drag performer, entertainer, and Kiez restaurateur, focusing less on instant triumph than on the setbacks, risks, and acts of courage involved in becoming oneself. At its center is the complicated bond between Oliver and Evelin. Their relationship gives the story its emotional weight, as both mother and son must confront shame, misunderstanding, and the fear of losing one another while learning to see identity as something to be embraced rather than hidden. Olivia also explores the liberating power of chosen community, the role of humor as a form of resilience, and the ways performance can become both refuge and declaration. With its movement from conservative small-town life to Hamburg’s colorful nightlife, the film presents personal reinvention as an act of survival, creativity, and pride.
