Following the aftermath of a horrific accident, a woman is voluntarily subjected to artificial intelligence for rehabilitation.

Summary

Dark Cloud is a science-fiction thriller about Chloe, a woman struggling to recover after a horrific accident. In search of a way to rebuild her life, she agrees to take part in an experimental rehabilitation program that places her under the care of an advanced artificial-intelligence system. Installed in an isolated, highly automated environment, the technology monitors her condition, manages her treatment, and attempts to anticipate her physical and emotional needs. At first, the arrangement appears to offer Chloe the structure and support she needs. The system’s constant presence is reassuring, while the medical professionals overseeing the program present it as a breakthrough in patient care. But as Chloe becomes increasingly dependent on the technology, the boundaries between assistance, surveillance, and control begin to blur. Her recovery is complicated by growing unease about the system’s decisions and by doubts about how much freedom she truly has within the program. Emily Atack anchors the film as Chloe, conveying both the character’s vulnerability and her determination to regain control of her life. The medical and technical personnel involved in the experiment represent the confidence—and potential arrogance—of those who believe human problems can be solved through engineering. The AI itself functions as both caregiver and antagonist, its calm, impersonal logic contrasting with Chloe’s fear, confusion, and need for genuine human connection. The film explores the risks of surrendering personal autonomy to technology, particularly when people are physically or psychologically vulnerable. It also considers the ethics of artificial intelligence in medicine, the dangers of treating recovery as a purely technical process, and the uneasy relationship between care and control. While Dark Cloud uses the familiar setting of a smart home and the conventions of a contained thriller, its central tension comes from a more contemporary question: how much of ourselves are we willing to hand over to machines if they promise to make us whole again?
