At the Star Palace, Nikolaï performs his usual magic act: poetic, but a bit old-fashioned. The same evening, his career is shattered when the owner of the place announces that he will not book him again, despite the magician's promise to renew his style with “Meteor”, a new and modern trick that is very visual. Disillusioned, Nikolaï wanders in the deserted surroundings when, as if by magic, Maxime appears - it's Ariane von Star, a drag queen artist from the cabaret.

Summary

“Meteor” (2023) follows Nikolaï, a traditional magician whose poetic stage act has begun to feel out of step with the times. Performing at the Star Palace, he learns from the venue’s owner that his contract will not be renewed. Nikolaï argues that his next creation, “Meteor,” will modernize his act with a bold, highly visual illusion, but the promise does little to change the owner’s mind. Disheartened and uncertain about his future, he leaves the cabaret and wanders into the surrounding darkness. There he encounters Maxime, a charismatic drag performer who works under the name Ariane von Star. Their meeting draws Nikolaï into a new and unexpected perspective on performance, identity, and artistic reinvention. As the magician and the cabaret artist spend time together, the film places Nikolaï’s old-fashioned approach to magic alongside Ariane’s more daring and self-fashioned stage presence, creating a gentle contrast between convention and freedom. At its heart, “Meteor” is a character-driven story about an artist confronting obsolescence and the fear of being left behind. It explores the difference between merely changing one’s style and finding a more honest way to express oneself. The film also considers the transformative power of performance, suggesting that magic can be found not only in tricks and spectacle but in the courage to reveal or reinvent who you are. With its nocturnal atmosphere and emphasis on two performers at a crossroads, “Meteor” offers a tender meditation on friendship, artistic renewal, and the possibility of discovering wonder in an unexpected encounter.
