There is a place, a world, that film creates; somewhere between the harsh lines and light of reality, and the soft warm flickering of the projector. Many people enter. Some never return.

Summary

Matilda the Musical (2022) follows Matilda Wormwood, an exceptionally intelligent and imaginative young girl growing up in a household that dismisses books, curiosity, and independent thought. While her parents celebrate shallow ideas of success and treat her as a nuisance, Matilda finds refuge in reading and storytelling, developing a vivid inner world that helps her make sense of the unfairness around her. When Matilda begins attending Crunchem Hall Primary School, she encounters the kindhearted Miss Honey, a teacher who recognizes her unusual gifts, and the terrifying headmistress Miss Trunchbull, whose strict discipline and cruelty turn the school into a place of fear. As Matilda and her classmates endure Trunchbull’s punishments, the young heroine’s courage, intelligence, and growing sense of justice inspire her to challenge the adults who abuse their power. The film’s musical numbers bring her imagination and the children’s rebellion vividly to life, balancing dark comedy with exuberant fantasy. Alisha Weir gives Matilda a spirited, emotionally perceptive center, while Lashana Lynch brings warmth and gentleness to Miss Honey. Emma Thompson’s flamboyant, menacing performance as Trunchbull makes the headmistress an especially memorable villain, and Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough play Matilda’s self-absorbed parents as exaggerated embodiments of the values she rejects. Directed by Matthew Warchus, the film expands Roald Dahl’s story into a visually theatrical celebration of storytelling itself. Its central themes include the importance of education, the liberating power of imagination, and the need to stand up against bullying and authoritarianism. It also argues that family can be defined by love and understanding rather than biology, and that even a child who feels powerless can influence the world through bravery, empathy, and the determination to tell her own story.
