Summary
In “Los afectos,” Benja is a high school inspector whose life is governed by rules, discipline, and the authority of his position. When his daughter Karina, a politically engaged student, dies during a protest, he is left grieving and struggling to understand the young woman he thought he knew. His response is complicated by his hostility toward Iván, one of Karina’s friends and a prominent protester whom Benja is determined to expel from the school. What begins as an attempt to punish Iván gradually becomes a reluctant confrontation with Benja’s own failures as a father. Through the rebellious student, he encounters aspects of Karina’s beliefs, friendships, and inner life that had remained inaccessible to him. Iván, meanwhile, is more than a symbol of youthful defiance: he is a grieving teenager navigating anger, idealism, and the consequences of being treated as a problem by the adults around him. The film unfolds as an intimate drama about loss and the painful distance that can exist within a family, even between people who love one another. It examines the limits of institutional authority, the tension between generations, and the ways grief can turn into blame or a desire for control. At its center is Benja’s uneasy effort to make sense of his daughter after her death, using his connection with Iván to approach a part of her life he had failed to recognize. Quiet, mournful, and politically charged, “Los afectos” considers whether empathy and understanding can emerge from guilt, and whether confronting another person’s experience can offer even a fragile path toward reconciliation.
