LESSON
Play, from the top, again
Kyung-min is an English tutor who is often pressured by his lover Seon-hee about getting married. He starts giving lessons to a new student Young-won, a piano tutor, and they decide to exchange tutoring like barter. Unlike Seon-hee, she seems to be an untied person when it comes to relationships, which strongly attracts Kyung-min. But as he falls for her, he faces unexpected but familiar situations.
Summary
Lesson (2025) follows Kyung-min, an English tutor whose personal life is shaped by the persistent expectations of his lover, Seon-hee. She wants their relationship to move toward marriage, but Kyung-min appears uncertain about settling into the future she imagines. His hesitation becomes more pronounced when he meets Young-won, a piano tutor who is looking for help with English. Rather than paying for conventional lessons, Kyung-min and Young-won agree to exchange their skills, with each teaching the other. Their arrangement creates an intimate space in which they can speak openly and observe one another outside the pressures of their established lives. Young-won seems less bound by conventional ideas about romance and commitment than Seon-hee, and her apparent independence quickly captivates Kyung-min. What begins as a practical agreement gradually becomes emotionally complicated as attraction enters the relationship. As Kyung-min grows closer to Young-won, he finds himself caught between desire, responsibility, and the unresolved demands of his relationship with Seon-hee. The film uses this shifting romantic triangle to examine the uneasy gap between wanting freedom and seeking security, as well as the ways people can repeat familiar emotional patterns even when they believe they are choosing something new. Its central concerns include commitment, intimacy, self-deception, and the difficulty of making honest choices when affection and obligation pull in different directions. Rather than presenting romance as a simple escape, Lesson portrays it as a test of how well its characters understand themselves and one another.
