Le Bracelet
After 18 years in prison, André returns home wearing an electronic ankle bracelet. His return is not greeted with enthusiasm, far from it! His wife can't stand his presence, his mother-in-law is intrusive, and his 20-year-old daughter, whom he didn't see grow up, refuses to call him dad. Recorded at the Théâtre des Nouveautés in Paris's 9th arrondissement.
Summary
After 18 years in prison, André returns to his family home wearing an electronic ankle bracelet and hoping, perhaps unrealistically, to reclaim some place in the life that continued without him. His homecoming is anything but warm. His wife resents his presence and the disruption it brings, while his intrusive mother-in-law wastes no time making the situation even more uncomfortable. Most painful of all is André’s relationship with his 20-year-old daughter, whom he never watched grow up and who refuses to call him “Dad.” Set largely within the confines of the family home, Le Bracelet turns André’s return into an uneasy domestic confrontation. The ankle bracelet is a constant reminder of his past and of the restrictions still imposed on his life, but the deeper barriers are emotional ones: anger, mistrust, shame, and years of silence. As André tries to navigate a family that has learned to live without him, each relationship exposes a different consequence of his absence. The film balances uncomfortable humor with genuine emotional tension, finding both absurdity and tenderness in a reunion that no one is fully prepared to accept. Its central themes include punishment beyond the prison sentence, the possibility—or limits—of redemption, and the difficulty of rebuilding intimate relationships after years of separation. At its heart, Le Bracelet asks whether returning home is enough to earn a place in a family, and whether forgiveness can begin before anyone is ready to offer it. Recorded at Paris’s Théâtre des Nouveautés, the production retains the immediacy of live theater, allowing its sharp dialogue and charged family dynamics to drive the drama.
