Summary
Kangaroo (2025) follows Chris Masterman, a former television personality whose career and personal life have left him adrift. After becoming stranded in a remote Outback town near Alice Springs, Chris finds himself far from the media spotlight and the familiar world he once knew. His situation changes when he meets Charlie, a determined 12-year-old Indigenous girl with a deep connection to the surrounding land and its wildlife. Together, Chris and Charlie become involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned kangaroo joeys. What begins as an unlikely partnership gradually develops into a genuine friendship, as the pair navigate the practical challenges of caring for vulnerable animals and the emotional difficulties each carries. Charlie brings local knowledge, courage, and compassion to the work, while Chris is forced to look beyond his damaged self-image and reconsider what gives life meaning. Set against the striking landscapes of Central Australia, the film combines gentle adventure with a character-driven story about healing and second chances. Its central themes include friendship across generations and backgrounds, respect for Indigenous knowledge, responsibility toward animals, and the restorative power of community. The joeys’ fragility mirrors the struggles of both protagonists, allowing their shared efforts to become a path toward greater confidence, empathy, and belonging. Rather than treating the Outback as merely a backdrop, Kangaroo presents it as a living environment that shapes the people who inhabit it and encourages them to see themselves—and one another—in a new light.
