A junior psychologist provides consultation sessions to three of her patients, but their experiences trigger her to question her position in this world.

Summary

In Retrospect (2022) follows a junior psychologist who conducts consultation sessions with three patients, each bringing a distinct personal crisis into the room. At first, she appears to occupy the familiar professional role of attentive observer: listening carefully, asking questions, and trying to offer clarity without becoming emotionally involved. Yet the patients’ experiences gradually begin to affect her more deeply than she expects. Their fears, memories, and conflicting views of reality prompt her to examine her own assumptions and the fragile position from which she judges what is healthy, rational, or true. Rather than presenting therapy as a simple process of diagnosis and resolution, the film focuses on the shifting relationship between the person who listens and the people who are being heard. The three consultations become interconnected through the psychologist’s growing self-questioning, as professional distance gives way to empathy, uncertainty, and personal reflection. The principal characters are therefore the young psychologist and the three patients whose stories challenge her understanding of both them and herself. Quiet and introspective, In Retrospect explores the limits of objectivity, the burden of empathy, and the ways other people’s experiences can unsettle one’s sense of identity. It is also concerned with perception: how people construct explanations for their lives, how easily those explanations can be questioned, and whether anyone can truly remain an impartial observer. The result is a psychologically focused drama about emotional boundaries, self-discovery, and the uneasy connection between understanding another person and confronting oneself.
