Summary

Set in Shanghai during World War II, Hidden Blade follows a network of covert operatives working in the shadow of Japanese occupation and the collaborationist Wang Jingwei regime. After Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor and the regime’s declaration of war on Britain and the United States, the city becomes a dangerous arena of surveillance, espionage, and shifting allegiances. Resistance workers pass intelligence, protect vital contacts, and carry out missions that can expose them to arrest or execution at any moment. Tony Leung plays Mr. He, a seasoned intelligence officer whose calm authority conceals the pressure of operating among enemies and uncertain allies. Wang Yibo portrays Mr. Ye, a younger operative drawn into the perilous machinery of underground resistance. Around them are figures such as Zhou Xun’s enigmatic agent and other officials, informants, and civilians whose loyalties are never entirely easy to read. Their encounters unfold through coded messages, interrogations, clandestine meetings, and carefully staged acts of deception. Rather than presenting espionage as a straightforward contest between heroes and villains, the film emphasizes the psychological strain of living under occupation.
