Summary

“Handsome” follows No Mi Nam, a mild-mannered police officer whose intimidating, gangster-like face causes people to misjudge him despite his kind personality and dedication to the job. While trying to stop a fight involving a fellow detective, Mi Nam is involved in an accident and spends a month recovering from surgery. When he finally wakes up, he discovers that his appearance has changed dramatically: the face once associated with danger has been replaced by an exceptionally handsome one. At first, Mi Nam is thrilled by the sudden change in the way people treat him. The attention and admiration he receives awaken an unexpected sense of vanity, and he begins to experience the privileges—and temptations—that come with being considered attractive. His new confidence, however, also makes him a source of frustration for his colleagues, who see him becoming increasingly self-absorbed at a time when the squad needs him to focus on police work. Mi Nam is eventually assigned to a difficult investigation involving a hair salon on the outskirts of town. What initially seems like an unwelcome diversion becomes a chance for him to prove himself, both as an officer and as a person. Along the way, the film uses the contrasting versions of Mi Nam—before and after the surgery—to explore how quickly society’s attitudes can change based solely on appearance. His fellow detectives and the people he encounters help reveal the gap between outward image and inner character, while also providing much of the movie’s comic energy. Blending police-procedural elements with broad comedy and a touch of romantic and satirical flavor, “Handsome” centers on questions of identity, self-esteem, and social prejudice. Mi Nam’s transformation forces him to consider whether the world is finally seeing the real him or merely reacting to a more acceptable face. The film’s central joke is also its most pointed observation: people who were quick to fear or dismiss him before are suddenly eager to welcome him, suggesting that attractiveness can function like a kind of social power. Without losing its light tone, “Handsome” invites viewers to look past appearances and consider how much of a person’s value is shaped by their own character—and how much is imposed by the people around them.
