Deep into a run of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, the lead actor confronts a figure of his overheated imagination - a protective theater ghost and a flock of her followers. But is it his imagination, or a sinister curtain call?

Summary

“Ghost Lights” (2022) follows the lead actor in a production of Shakespeare’s “Coriolanus” as the demands of a long, intense theatrical run begin to blur the boundary between performance and reality. Onstage, he plays a proud warrior consumed by political conflict; offstage, he finds himself confronting a mysterious figure who appears to be a protective ghost haunting the theater. The apparition is accompanied by a group of followers, turning what might have been a private hallucination into something far more unsettling. As the actor struggles to understand these visions, the play’s themes of power, loyalty, pride, and exile begin to echo through his own experience. His fellow theater people and the atmosphere of the old performance space add to the mounting sense that the building carries memories of its own. Yet the film keeps its supernatural events deliberately ambiguous: the ghost may be a product of exhaustion, imagination, and artistic obsession, or it may represent a genuine and increasingly threatening presence. Blending backstage drama with psychological horror, “Ghost Lights” explores the vulnerability of performers who lose themselves in their roles, the lingering influence of those who came before, and the uneasy relationship between storytelling and belief. Its central tension comes from watching an actor try to maintain control while the world of “Coriolanus”—and the theater surrounding him—seems to seep into his everyday life.
