Summary

Set in 2004, Foreigner follows Yasamin “Yasi,” an Iranian immigrant starting over at a Canadian high school. Already facing the ordinary anxieties of adolescence, Yasi must also navigate a new language, unfamiliar social codes, and the constant pressure of being seen as different. She practices English by watching her favorite sitcom, using its polished version of teenage life as both a lesson and an escape from the discomfort of her own circumstances. At school, Yasi is drawn to a trio of pastel-clad girls who appear to embody the effortless popularity she longs for. Their attention offers her a chance to belong, but it also encourages her to reshape herself according to an ideal that is not truly her own. In a particularly revealing act of self-transformation, Yasi dyes her hair blonde, hoping the change will help her pass more easily within her new environment. Instead, the makeover becomes connected to the arrival of a demonic force, turning her struggle for acceptance into a frightening supernatural ordeal. Foreigner uses horror to explore the emotional violence of assimilation and the way adolescent identity can be molded by external expectations.
