Summary

“Liquid States” follows sisters Nina and Miki as they leave behind their familiar life and travel to a small village in Poland’s Mazuria region to spend the summer with their long-estranged father. The arrangement is prompted by their mother’s decision to accept a job in the United States, a choice that Nina strongly opposes. For Nina, the separation is not simply a matter of geography: she blames her father for the family’s breakup and resents being sent to stay with someone she feels has already abandoned them. The summer brings the sisters into an unfamiliar rural world and forces them to confront the complicated history binding their family together. Nina’s anger makes every interaction with her father tense, while Miki’s position within the fractured family adds another emotional dimension to their stay.
