Summary

ED: Extra Decent is a Malayalam comedy-drama built around a darkly comic domestic premise. Binu, played by Suraj Venjaramoodu, is a domineering man whose temper and controlling behavior have made life difficult for the people closest to him. After a blow to the head leaves him hospitalized with memory loss, his family—particularly his wife Shiny, played by Grace Antony, and his mother, portrayed by Vinaya Prasad—sees an unexpected opportunity to create a more peaceful life. Rather than help Binu recover the unpleasant truth about his past, they carefully manage what he is told, presenting him with a gentler version of himself and quietly concealing the behavior that made him so feared and resented. Their increasingly elaborate efforts to maintain this illusion drive the film’s humor, while Binu’s attempts to understand his identity create an undercurrent of unease. The family’s scheme also forces them to confront their own compromises: they are not simply protecting Binu, but trying to preserve the brief sense of freedom and harmony his amnesia has brought them. The film uses its absurd situation to explore domestic power, emotional abuse, family complicity and the possibility—or impossibility—of personal change. Its comedy comes from the awkward gap between Binu’s self-image and the man his family remembers, while the performances give the story a more serious emotional foundation. Suraj brings both menace and vulnerability to the central role, and Grace Antony provides a grounded counterpoint as a woman navigating the consequences of years spent under someone else’s control. Without giving away its later developments, ED: Extra Decent is best understood as a bittersweet, occasionally broad examination of whether a person can become better simply by forgetting who he was.
