Forced to leave the comfort of his middle class lifestyle at his father's behest, fourteen-year-old Ahmet is sent to an all-boys religious dormitory where he must navigate familial expectations, his religious obligations, and the childhood to which he so desperately clings.

Summary

Set in Turkey in the late 1990s, Dormitory follows fourteen-year-old Ahmet, a middle-class boy whose protected home life comes to an abrupt end when his father sends him to an all-boys religious dormitory. The decision is meant to discipline him and strengthen his religious education, but for Ahmet it feels like exile. Removed from his family, familiar routines, and the childhood he is not ready to surrender, he must adjust to a strict communal world governed by prayer, rules, hierarchy, and constant supervision. At the dormitory, Ahmet encounters boys from different backgrounds and learns that friendship can be both a refuge and a source of pressure. His bond with a fellow student gives him an outlet for his confusion and loneliness, while the expectations of older students and dormitory authorities force him to consider how much of himself he is willing to conceal or change. His relationship with his father remains equally important: the boy’s displacement is tied to a parent’s hopes for his future, yet those hopes leave little room for Ahmet’s own fears, desires, or need for independence. Rather than treating religion or family authority in simple terms, the film focuses on the emotional and social experience of growing up within systems that demand obedience. Ahmet’s struggle reflects broader tensions in Turkish society between secular and religious identities, tradition and modernity, and private belief and public conformity. The dormitory becomes a miniature society where masculinity, loyalty, faith, and belonging are tested daily. With a restrained, observant style, Dormitory captures the awkwardness of adolescence and the quiet pain of being pushed toward adulthood before one is ready.
