Summary

Dear David follows Laras, a gifted high-school student whose academic achievements have earned her a chance at a promising future. Away from the classroom, however, she writes a secret online fantasy blog inspired by her feelings for David, a charismatic and popular schoolmate. The blog allows Laras to explore desires and emotions she cannot express openly, but her private writing becomes public when it is exposed to the entire school. Suddenly, Laras’s carefully controlled life is threatened by gossip, humiliation, and the judgment of classmates and teachers. Her relationship with David becomes increasingly complicated, while her friendship with Dilla, another important figure in the school’s social world, is tested by the scandal. As Laras struggles to protect her scholarship prospects and reputation, she is forced to confront how little privacy or understanding she can expect in an environment quick to condemn her. Directed by Lucky Kuswandi, Dear David combines a coming-of-age story with social commentary on sexuality, female desire, online identity, and the double standards surrounding young women.
