Summary

Cube (2021) traps six complete strangers inside a vast, seemingly endless maze of interconnected cube-shaped rooms. Each chamber may be empty, or it may contain a carefully concealed and potentially lethal trap, forcing the group to test doors, decipher patterns, and make impossible decisions before moving on. With no clear explanation for why they were chosen or who designed the maze, survival depends on cooperation—but fear, suspicion, and conflicting personalities quickly make that cooperation fragile. At the center is Yuichi Goto, an ordinary young man whose instinct is to help others even as the situation becomes increasingly terrifying. He is joined by Asako Kai, a composed and pragmatic woman; Shinji Ochi, whose guarded behavior makes him difficult to trust; Hiroshi Ide, an older man whose experience and authority influence the group; Chiharu Uno, a young student caught between panic and determination; and Daisuke Ando, whose abrasive, self-interested attitude repeatedly threatens the group’s fragile unity. Their different backgrounds and temperaments shape every argument over leadership, risk, and responsibility. The film uses its stark geometric setting to create sustained claustrophobia, turning a simple room into a puzzle box and every exit into a source of dread. As the characters search for a way out, Cube explores the tension between individual survival and collective responsibility, asking how quickly social rules collapse when people are placed under extreme pressure. It also examines conformity, prejudice, authority, and the human tendency to seek logic or blame in situations that appear completely senseless. While the premise recalls the original Cube, this Japanese adaptation emphasizes the characters’ emotional reactions and moral conflicts, making the maze as much a test of trust and humanity as it is a physical obstacle.
