Summary

“Cold” (2022) follows Miss Terry and her YouTube team as they pursue a new story: an abandoned theater that has become a possible refuge for people without homes. Hoping to turn the location into a meaningful report, the group heads out to investigate and document the situation. When they arrive, however, they discover that another content-creation crew has reached the theater first. The two teams are forced into an uneasy encounter, and together they witness a shocking incident that transforms their assignment into something far more troubling than a routine online feature. The film centers on Miss Terry, her fellow YouTubers, and the rival crew, using their differing reactions to the events at the theater to examine the responsibilities of people who record and distribute real-life suffering. Rather than presenting its protagonists as conventional heroes, “Cold” portrays them as ambitious media personalities caught between genuine concern, professional competition, and the pressure to produce attention-grabbing content. The people who occupy the theater—and whose circumstances motivate the report—remain at the heart of the story’s moral questions, even as the filmmakers focus on those observing and filming them. Part social drama and part critique of contemporary media culture, the film explores the blurred line between journalism and spectacle. It asks whether documenting a crisis can help those affected or merely turn their pain into entertainment, and whether good intentions are enough when publicity, views, and personal reputation are involved. “Cold” also considers how quickly ordinary people can become spectators, participants, or complicit observers when confronted with human suffering. Its bleak atmosphere and unsettling premise give the story a pointed edge, challenging viewers to think about morality, empathy, and the ways digital platforms shape our understanding of what it means to help.
