An expelled journalism student, trying to make sense of his life, carefully documents his summer, as well as the story of the disappearance and death of the founders of one of the first startups on the Russian Internet.

Summary

“Coeval” (2025) follows an expelled journalism student who spends the summer trying to regain a sense of direction. Adrift between personal uncertainty and professional ambition, he begins carefully documenting his days, turning his own life into a subject of investigation. At the same time, he becomes absorbed in the story of the disappearance and death of the founders of one of the earliest startups on the Russian internet. The film connects the student’s intimate, present-tense observations with the unfinished history of the young technology company and the people behind it. His project gradually becomes more than a private record: it is an attempt to understand how lives are shaped by ambition, memory, and the rapidly changing digital world. The student stands at the center of the film, while the absent startup founders remain a powerful presence through archival traces, recollections, and the questions surrounding their fate. Blending coming-of-age drama with investigative and documentary-like elements, “Coeval” explores the uncertain boundary between recording reality and interpreting it. Its central themes include the search for identity, the responsibilities of journalism, the fragility of memory, and the way personal and technological histories can mirror one another. Rather than presenting the internet’s early years as a simple story of progress, the film approaches them as a period marked by idealism, risk, loss, and unresolved mysteries.
