With executive production by Fernando Meirelles and direction by Fred Luz, actors Alexandre Rodrigues and Edson Oliveira are Buscapé and Barbantinho, two friends who meet again in today's City of God: bigger, more diverse and connected.

Summary

Set in the present day, Buscapé follows the reunion of two longtime friends, Buscapé and Barbantinho, in Rio de Janeiro’s City of God. Once defined largely by poverty and violence, the community they return to is now larger, more diverse, and increasingly connected to the outside world through technology and social media. Their encounter becomes a way of observing how the neighborhood has changed—and how much of its past still shapes the lives of its residents. Alexandre Rodrigues reprises the role of Buscapé, the thoughtful observer whose experiences have given him a distinctive perspective on the community, while Edson Oliveira plays Barbantinho, his old friend and a figure connected to Buscapé’s memories of growing up there. Their relationship provides the film’s emotional center: the two men share a history, but they also confront the distance that time and different paths can create. Rather than simply revisiting the world associated with City of God, the film presents a contemporary portrait of a place in transition. Its central themes include friendship, memory, social inequality, and the tension between progress and continuity. It also considers who gets to tell a community’s story and how familiar images of violence can obscure the complexity of everyday life. With executive production by Fernando Meirelles and direction by Fred Luz, Buscapé offers a concise, reflective return to a landmark setting while emphasizing the people and relationships that endure beyond its most famous stories.
