Summary
Break (2022) follows a young Japanese-American man trying to find his place in Tokyo while navigating the uneasy divide between his American upbringing and Japanese heritage. Hoping to fit into a society that often treats him as an outsider, he becomes involved with figures connected to the city’s criminal underworld. What begins as an attempt to gain acceptance and stability gradually draws him into increasingly dangerous territory, forcing him to confront the consequences of crossing boundaries he may not be able to uncross. At the center of the film is its conflicted protagonist, whose struggle is both external and deeply personal. Around him are members of Tokyo’s underworld, whose influence tests his judgment, as well as people who represent the possibility of a more honest connection to Japanese society.
