Sassi is more than 20 years older than his wife Effi and is worried about his declining powers. Surgery has left him seeking treatment for impotence, but Effi insists she’s content with their emotional closeness. In her work as a physical therapist, though, Effi sees the link between body and heart every day. The biggest challenge to their loving relationship has been the gambling debts Sassi’s adult son keeps running up. But the couple’s fragile understanding, compounded by the presence of two young men, introduces new threats. Their teenage grandson, Omri, returns from living with his father in Europe, at loose ends and clearly in need of guidance. For one thing, he can barely stand to wear a shirt. Then a young patient turns up at the swimming pool where Effi conducts therapy sessions. He comes to confront her about something from their past, something complicated, contested, and painful to them both.

Summary

“Bliss” (2024) is an intimate family drama about love, aging, and the uneasy relationship between physical desire and emotional closeness. At its center are Sassi and Effi, a long-married couple with a significant age difference. Sassi is struggling with the effects of surgery and the loss of sexual confidence that has followed it, while Effi, a physical therapist, tries to reassure him that their bond is not defined by his sexual performance. Yet her professional understanding of the body cannot fully protect their marriage from the fears and insecurities that accompany Sassi’s condition. Their private difficulties are compounded by family pressures. Sassi’s adult son has accumulated gambling debts, creating a recurring source of financial and emotional strain. At the same time, their teenage grandson Omri returns after living with his father in Europe. Restless, alienated, and resistant to authority—he can barely tolerate wearing a shirt—Omri seems to need both direction and a sense of belonging. His arrival brings generational tensions into the couple’s already fragile domestic balance. Effi’s work adds another layer of complication when a young patient appears at the swimming pool where she conducts therapy sessions. He has come to confront her about a painful and disputed event from their shared past, forcing Effi to face memories and responsibilities she may not be able to keep separate from her present life. His presence, alongside Omri’s unsettled return, introduces new emotional threats to Sassi and Effi’s carefully maintained understanding. Rather than treating intimacy as a simple matter of sex, “Bliss” explores how affection, shame, guilt, obligation, and physical vulnerability shape a long-term relationship. Its focus on bodies—aging bodies, injured bodies, desiring bodies, and bodies in need of care—mirrors a deeper interest in the ways people struggle to communicate what they want and what they fear losing. The film also considers masculinity, generational responsibility, the boundaries between care and control, and whether emotional closeness can survive when the past refuses to remain buried.
