Summary

Set in a small Montana town, Bits (2024) follows a young woman whose life is disrupted when she attracts the attention of a serial killer searching for his next target. What begins as a terrifying encounter gradually becomes something more psychologically complicated: when the killer’s pursuit suddenly stops, she is left not only with fear, but with the unsettling feeling that she has been rejected. Rather than treating the killer solely as a conventional monster, the film focuses on the young woman’s troubled inner life and the emotional damage that predates—or at least complicates—her encounter with him. Desperate for closure, she becomes fixated on understanding why his interest vanished and what that disappearance says about her. Her search draws her into an uneasy tangle of longing, resentment, neglect, and desire, blurring the line between victimhood and emotional dependence. The central characters are the isolated young woman and the serial killer whose attention briefly gives shape to feelings she has struggled to confront. The surrounding small-town setting reinforces the film’s atmosphere of confinement, loneliness, and limited escape. Bits is ultimately less a straightforward thriller than a dark psychological study of validation and abandonment, asking why even dangerous attention can feel preferable to being ignored—and how the need to be seen can distort the pursuit of answers.
