In an abandoned Tokyo overrun by bubbles and gravitational abnormalities, one gifted young man has a fateful meeting with a mysterious girl.

Summary

Bubble (2022) reimagines Tokyo as a flooded, abandoned playground where strange bubbles have warped gravity and made ordinary movement dangerously unpredictable. Cut off from the rest of the world, the city has become home to groups of young survivors who compete in elaborate parkour-style battles across its submerged streets and ruined buildings. Among them is Hibiki, a gifted but isolated runner whose extraordinary sensitivity to sound and instinctive understanding of the city’s shifting gravitational fields make him one of the most formidable competitors. Hibiki’s life changes when he encounters Uta, a mysterious girl who seems strangely connected to the bubbles and possesses an equally remarkable ability to navigate the distorted landscape. Their meeting draws Hibiki into a deeper mystery surrounding the catastrophe that transformed Tokyo, while also bringing him closer to the other members of his team, including the spirited Makoto and their resourceful captain, Shin. Together, they face the physical dangers of the city and the rival teams that treat its ruins as both a home and an arena. Directed by Tetsurō Araki, Bubble combines high-speed action with a romantic, fairy-tale atmosphere. Its breathtaking animation turns gravity-defying chases into ballets of color and motion, while the deserted city creates a haunting contrast between beauty and devastation. Beneath its sci-fi premise, the film explores isolation, connection, grief, and the desire to find meaning after a world has been irrevocably changed. Hibiki’s bond with Uta gives the story its emotional center, as both characters struggle to understand where they belong and whether human relationships can offer hope in an unstable world.
