Charles Chaplin a jeho souboj se stroji v éře, která není příliš nakloněna lidem. Společenská satira natáčená ještě v konvencích pantomimy němého období. Protest proti nehumánním aspektům technické civilizace a automatizace lidského života. Film je vybudovaný jako mozaika epizod, každá z nich má vlastní výstavbu gagů, geniálně se v ní uplatňuje smysl pro humor ironii i sarkasmus.
