Úspěšný architekt Steven požádal svoji přítelkyni o ruku. Reakce byla nečekaná – emancipovaná Robin ho vyhodila z bytu. Při zařizování nového příbytku se pak Steven seznámil s poněkud excentrickým montérem Chipem, který mu načerno zapojil několik programů kabelové televize. Steven zaplatil Chipovi padesát dolarů a bláhově se domníval, že už ho nikdy neuvidí. Jak strašlivý omyl! Osamělý Chip začal považovat sympatického zákazníka za svého nejlepšího přítele a nevybíravě se mu naboural do života.
