في الجزائر، في مدينة قالمة، التي كانت تسمى سابقًا هليوبوليس، تسير الحياة اليومية لعائلة جزائرية على مسارها المعتاد. لكن في 8 مايو 1945، يوم إعلان نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية، خرجت مظاهرات للشعب الجزائري ضد القوة الاستعمارية الفرنسية ومن أجل استقلال البلاد، والتي قمعها الجيش الفرنسي والفرنسي بشكل دموي ميليشيات المستوطنين. وقد دخل هذا الحدث في التاريخ تحت اسم مجزرة سطيف وقالمة.
