Shrek a maintenant trois enfants, une femme et des admirateurs partout à travers le marais. Même s'il a tout ce qu'un ogre peut désirer, il regrette le temps où il terrifiait les villageois et pouvait se reposer en paix. Le méchant Nain tracassin lui propose alors un marché : en échange d'une journée où il redeviendrait un ogre terrifiant, Shrek devra donner un jour de son passé dont il ne se souvient même pas. Shrek signe donc le contrat et se retrouve dans un monde parallèle où il est craint, mais où tous ses amis, et même sa femme Fiona, ne le connaissent pas. Afin de renverser le mauvais sort, il devra l'embrasser avant le lever du soleil.
