Cole Trickle est un nouveau venu dans le monde des courses de stock-cars. Malgré son inexpérience, il gagne la confiance du patron d'équipe Tim Daland et du constructeur Harry Hogge. De circuit en circuit, Cole apprend les secrets du métier. De fréquents duels l'opposent à Rowdy Bums, le champion en titre, jusqu'au jour où, après une violente collision, ils se retrouvent tous les deux à l'hôpital.
