Kung fu journey up Wudang Mountains
Located in central China's Hubei Province, Wudang Mountains is a UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage site recognized as the cradle of Wudang kung fu and as a renowned Taoist sanctuary. Every year, young students from different parts of China flock to these well-established kung fu academies to experience a childhood like no other. Li Weimu and Li Muzi study at two separate kung fu academies, and are following their own paths at Wudang Mountains.
Kungfu-wise: White Crane
In Yongchun, China, Kleber explores the origins of White Crane kungfu and its effect on the martial arts world. He learns how its blocks and strikes were inspired by animal movements, and how acupuncture points can be used to deadly effect. After training his grip and finger strength with wooden sticks, he travels to Beijing for an introduction to Goju-ryu karate, and discovers striking similarities with White Crane.

Colors of the Daliang Mountains
In the first episode of our Sichuan Daliang Mountains series, we journey to Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province. Setting off from Xichang, the prefectural capital, we first explore Lizhou Ancient Town, the southern gateway of the Southern Silk Road. We then travel to Huili County in the southernmost part of the Daliang Mountains, where we listen to the morning bells and evening drums, try our hand at making green pottery, and pick fresh pomegranates. Finally, we head to the western part of the Greater Liangshan Mountains and step into the mysterious Lugu Lake. We visit a Mosuo family to learn about their unique culture and take part in one of the Mosuo people’s most important rituals: the coming?of?age ceremony.

Along the way, the episode unpacks the idea of “opening the gate”, the key to focused power, and the spirit of spear work. It goes beyond technique to reveal Cangzhou’s rich martial heritage, tracing how Wu-style Baji Quan has travelled from its hometown to Europe, proof that traditional kung fu can endure, evolve, and thrive today. In the end, Wu Hao answers with action: true inheritance is not only about skills, but about shaping spirit and character.

During the bustling yak culture festival, people gather from near and far, meadows are crowded, and yak appraisal activities are also in full swing. As the journey continues, we are able to understand several aspects of the yak culture which is closely related to the life of Tibetan people.

Yueju Opera is one of the five major Chinese operas. It is skillful in narration and sentiment and is popular across China. This timeless form of intangible cultural heritage now has new apprentices. We followed a young duo of Yueju Opera performers: eleven-year-old Wang Yuhan and her stage partner, nine-year-old Huang Xinru in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, as they shared kindred spirits in inheriting the performing art of Yueju Opera.

Water nourishes the farmland; fire brings light and warmth. Water and fire are the two essential elements that sustain the life of the Yi people. Puge County is known as the birthplace of the Yi Torch Festival. Our host travels across mountains to the remote heart of Puge County, in search of the origins of the Yi torch, to learn about local daily life, explore the profound Yi culture, and visit a Yi family to share a special “reunion dinner” on the eve of the Torch Festival—just like their own New Year's Eve feast. In this episode host Tianran He continues his adventure across Hainan. This time, the road trip begins in Dongfang, where Tianran tucks into roast suckling pig by day and, by night, attends grassroots basketball games that rival NBA games in atmosphere. In the mountains of Wuzhishan, Tianran explores a lush jungle with forest rangers, before stepping back in time to 1988 for a retro-chic disco night. In Lingshui, the journey moves offshore as Tianran enjoys a seafood feast on a floating fishing platform, then heads back to shore to visit a contemporary art museum by the pier. After reaching Sanya in the south, he joins scuba divers on a mission to restore coral reefs, before winding down on a yacht with friends and laughter. Finally, Tianran travels to Baisha for the “La’aomen” harvest festival, where the local ethnic Li people sing, dance and celebrate their most important crop: “Mountain Orchid Rice”.
