Grønland

Grønland

Greenland is the largest island in the world and the landmass closest to the North Pole. 80% of the country is covered by a layer of ice up to 3000 meters thick. Most of the inhabitants of the country are spread over the breathtaking landscape of the ice-free west coast. The country is mostly inhabited by Inuit, who have been feeding on what nature has provided them for thousands of years. But the original life is in a state of change. The modernisation of society and man-made global warming threaten the Arctic natural paradise that is so incredibly important for our planet. Through the eyes of locals we get to know the authentic Greenland

Iceland

Iceland

Majestic volcanoes, seething geysers, raging waterfalls, threatening fjords, mighty glaciers, endless lava fields – there is hardly another country in the world that offers as much impressive nature as Iceland, the remote island in the harsh North Sea. The nature in Iceland is immense! Here, the four elements of nature can be experienced as raw and as close-up as practically no other place on Earth. And nowhere on the northern hemisphere can the origin of life, can growth and decay be experienced as dramatically as here. Besides the impressive nature, we get to know the dramatic history of the Viking culture with its nature-influenced mythology and discuss the negative effects of excessive tourism.

In episode 3, the journey goes to the almost forgotten region of Eastern Anatolia, which borders Armenia, Iran, Iraq and Syria. Accordingly, different cultures and religions mix here. The landscape is characterized by magnificent mountain ranges and endless steppes. Most people here live very simply, with sheep and goats adapted to the barren conditions and dry climate. The predominantly Kurdish society is still traditionally organized, with clear roles for women and men.

The 2nd episode starts in Central Anatolia, goes through Cappadocia and ends near the Syrian border. Those who set off from Antalya on the coast inland will reach Isparta. In the rose-growing region, author Nadja Frenz is intoxicated by the intense scent of the Damascene rose, in Konya she meets the dancing Dervishes and discovers the fairytale landscape of Cappadocia. The journey ends with homemade liqueurs in Samandağ, where Christians, Jews, Alewites and Sunnis still live in peaceful harmony - just a few kilometers from the Syrian border.

The 1st episode of the ARTE series "Adventure Turkey" shows the Mediterranean region: blossoming orchards, olive groves and "still" untouched nature frame historical treasures. In this environment, tradition and modernity engage in a daily confrontation. Is it better to preserve old craft traditions? Can they be brought into the modern age? Sabine Howe meets women who are swimming free, men who are clinging on - but above all people who are trying anew every day to resolve this question for themselves.
